Group Therapy – How It Works
Group therapy is a form of talk therapy where a group of 5-12 individuals gathers together to work through common concerns and issues. The group will be led by one or two counselors, and these counselors are trained to understand group dynamics. They can help harness the group’s strengths so that each individual has a voice, feels heard, contributes to the conversation constructively, and gains skills and tools that help their well-being.
It can be a huge relief to find others who struggle with the same things that you do. You may have been feeling a sense of isolation, which adds to the weight you carry daily. Group therapy is a place for healing and recovery by addressing many issues and concerns. These sessions are typically weekly, often about an hour long, and they can go on for 6 weeks or more depending on the issue.
Some of the issues that group therapy addresses include, but aren’t limited to, anxiety and stress management, depression, social skills and relationships, PTSD and trauma, addiction and substance abuse, grief and loss, self-esteem and self-worth, chronic illness and disability, family and parenting issues, issues of identity and culture, aging and eldercare, sexual identity and gender issues, eating disorders and body image, and autism spectrum disorder.

Because you may be in different places in your journey, you can be encouraged and encourage others along the way. Group therapy can broaden how you understand your own challenges and experiences.
Developing skills and tools Group therapy can also be a space where you learn and nurture skills that help you cope and flourish. You could learn, for example, healthier ways to manage your emotions, communicate assertively with others, listen well, and resolve conflict. In group therapy, you can practice these things and get constructive feedback to help you improve.
Developing self-awareness Do you know who you are? Often, as we interact with others, we get a clearer sense of who we are. Group therapy can provide you with space to understand your values, motivations, and goals. When you understand yourself better, this can also lead to a greater sense of self-regard, especially if you’re learning to appreciate your strengths.
