Counseling for individuals is a process through whereby an individual works one-on-one with a trained counselor in a safe and confidential setting. A counselor at Laguna Christian Counseling will initially assess the needs and issues of the client, then assist the client to create goals for therapy, and regularly collaborate on achieving those goals.

The therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect of individual counseling. If someone does not feel comfortable with his or her counselor, he or she may seek treatment elsewhere or ask the counselor to help in the referral process.

The counseling process may be short-term or long-term depending on the type of therapy used and the client’s individual needs. Therapy is considered incomplete until the person has met all his or her therapy goals, and the individual is stable and able to make decisions and handle difficult situations without the aid of the counselor.

Some of the most common types of issues that individuals manifest in counseling are depression, anxiety, relationship issues, low self-esteem, PTSD, trauma, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, and addiction, among others.

The Christian counselors in Laguna approaches psychotherapy uniquely, but some of the most effective types of therapy include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psychoanalytic Therapy, Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Solution-focused Therapy, Person-centered Therapy, and Eclectic Therapy. The type of therapy utilized by the counselor will be determined by the counselor’s training and level of competence and the client’s personality and presenting issues.

A person should seek professional counseling if he or she is experiencing excessive sadness, anxiety, low energy to do things one enjoys, or mood-swings, is having serious relational issues, and/or is using poor coping methods, it is time to seek counseling.
